The Israel Association for Marital and Family Therapy and Family Life Education

The Israel Association for Marital and Family Therapy and Family Life Education is an interdisciplinary organization for more than 1,000 professionals engaged in family and couple therapy, in family life education and in family and couple relationship enrichment.

Professionals engaged in family therapy include social workers, psychologists, educational counselors, family doctors, clinical criminologists and art therapists who specialize in family and couple therapy, many of whom have met the criteria of the Association's Committee for Certification of Marital and Family Therapists.
The Israeli Association for Marital and Family Therapy and Family Life Education was founded in 1977 in order to facilitate progress in the field of family and couple therapy nationally. The Association's Certification Committee developed criteria for regulating the training of family therapists and family therapy supervisors. The Association is the only organization in Israel that handles the certification of family therapists – psychologists, social workers and counselors who have undergone specific family therapy training, adapted to the its criteria, and have acquired supervised experience in this field. The Association also prepared a code of ethics for marriage and family therapists and requires its members to abide by these ethical standards.

The Association aims to strengthen the members' proficiency by holding national and international conferences, seminars and workshops (press here for list of events); it promotes cooperation with academic and social organizations to enrich member training; it publishes a professional periodical in Hebrew and endeavors to enlarge the learning and know-how resources available to its members through its internet site; it offers a platform for senior professionals from Israel and abroad to share their accumulated knowledge and experience with the Association's members.

The Association is a non-profit organization and its activity is based on volunteer work by its members. Historically, the beginnings of family therapy in Israel can be traced back to the 1960s, when the late Dr. Mordechai Kaufman and the late Dr. Avner Barkai founded therapy centers in Tel Aviv (Telem and Barkai Institute, respectively.) During the 1970s, Mr. Dror Wertheimer trained social workers in the public sectorin family therapy skills. In1984, Prof. Israel Tcharny, who was elected to be the first chairman of the Association after its foundation in 1977, startedthe first academic program for family therapists. Subsequent chairmen and chairwomen were the late Dr. Zeev Segal, Dr. Cynthia Carel, Prof. Yael Giron, Dr. Susan Zaidel, Dr. Ruth Malkinson, Dr. Eva Enat, Dr. Daniela Mack, Dr. Aviva Mazor, Dr. Omer lance and the present chairwoman is Prof. Nehami Baum.

The Israeli Association for Marital and Family Therapy and Family Life Education retains regular contacts with corresponding organizations worldwide.
The Association's website posts listings of the certified family therapists in Israel, classified by geographic location of their practice.
The Association has an elected Ethics Committee to supervise member compliance with the norms of ethical conduct. The norms of professional and ethical conduct bind all its members, as well as candidates for membership. The Association's ethical committee should be informed about any violation of the norms.
